As a Teacher of Speech and Language Disabilities (TSLD) in the New York City Board of Education, I service school age children in an elementary school who demonstrate either a speech-language disorder or delay. Along with the School Based Support Team (SBST) including Psychologists, Social Workers, Service Providers, Teachers, and Families, I provide comprehensive language and speech assessments/screenings for students to identify whether or not there is a speech-language delay and develop an appropriate intervention plan. Students with speech-language disorders or delays that are adversely affecting their academic success receive a mandated service, as outlined by their Individualized Education Plan (IEP), where they may be seen in individual or small group sessions. Other students who present with mild delays may receive Speech "At Risk" services in morning program to address areas of need. As a school based Speech Language Pathologist, I integrate my students' speech-language goals with academic expectations and functional performance. I align the work that I do with the Common Core Standards to ensure that each child is given the appropriate supports to meet given academic benchmarks. As a general education classroom teacher, I designed and implemented NYS curriculum for children in the fifth grade. I worked in a general education classroom setting as well as in partnership as the General Education teacher in a Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) setting. As the grade leader, I facilitated grade meetings in areas of Literacy, Math, and Social Studies. Beginning in 2006, I participated in study groups and professional development through Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project. In addition, I collaborated to design units of study for Elementary and Middle school Social Studies based on the NY State standards through the Becoming Historians, Teaching American History Grant.
With every lesson, I attempt to tap in to multiple learning styles (ex. auditory, visual, & kinesthetic). I follow the Constructivist Philosophy of teaching where a child is given various opportunities to find his/her own solutions to problems and establish meaningful connections to his/her learning.
