Since 2015 I have been working with years R to 7 in special education support, particularly multi-sensory literacy and numeracy. During that time, I also managed a university-developed math intervention program for 5 terms, at a government primary school. Currently I work for an independent school, in personalised learning support. Over the the past 4 years I have tutored students who have special education needs (due to learning challenges such as ASD, APD, dyslexia, FASD, ODD, ADHD), and also tutored gifted and mainstream students. I have experience working in government schools, and at a private coaching college, and also in 1:1 learning support classes. I also tutor privately in literacy and numeracy intervention for students who have dyslexia and other learning issues, which respond to multi-sensory supports. From 2013 to 2015, I created and delivered curriculum-linked interactive marine science presentations to around 1,500 students at more than 30 metropolitan and regional area schools. In 2015-16 I created video resources and K - Yr 7 hands-on learning activities for a Statewide educational facility in South Australia, linked with Australian Curriculum HASS (History). Special education is my career change, after 30 years working in marine science and marine education.
Differentiated, inclusive, and creative. My teaching style is humanist and co-operative, with an emphasis on developing individual skills and self-efficacy in each student. Some of the resources I create aim to engage multiple senses simultaneously, to develop deeper learning. I use such resources with students who have dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, receptive language disorders, ASDs, and attention deficit. I aim to help students develop life-relevant, transferable knowledge and skills. My resources are designed to help students enjoy, appreciate and better understand concepts in literacy, numeracy, science, and other primary curriculum areas.
