TEACHING EXPERIENCE

This is my 15th year teaching elementary general music, choir, drum/percussion groups and more. I have put on many performances, musicals to include Broadway Jr. I have taught one year of elementary band which included starting the band from scratch.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Heinz 57 - I use a mixture of teaching methodologies. I see value in Orff and Kodaly and others, but haven't become exclusive to one style over another. I do whatever it takes to help children learn. I use Orff instruments, percussion instruments, sol fege, Smart Board, Smart Table, iPads and more in my classroom. I'm passionate about putting instruments in the hands of my students, especially Recorders. My classroom is a place where students are "actively" learning, singing, playing, dancing, reading, creating and making music!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Received Doud and Kreuscher Scholarships at Mansfield University.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I grew up in upstate New York and went to Mansfield University of PA for my undergraduate degree in Music Education and received my Masters of Arts in Teaching from George Mason University, here in VA, in 2007.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Teaching music to children is a joy that I cherish each and every day. Giving them the gift of music literacy over a period of time combined with an ability to sing and play an instrument will hopefully instill in them the desire to explore, experience and enjoy the arts for years to come. My first musical love is the flute, followed by singing and Drum & Bugle Corps where I played in the pit orchestra and gravitated toward Marimba and percussion instruments.
