TEACHING EXPERIENCE

For the past 16 years taught in an Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) class. I started teaching in a 7th-8th grade ASD class where I taught for 2 years before moving to a 4th-6th-grade ASD class for 2 years, and then I taught an early intervention ASD pre-school class.   For 8 years I taught an ASD class in K-2nd grade and then in a K-1st ASD class.  I have experience working with children with Autism and behavior disorders of all ages from early intervention to teen years. I have dedicated my adult life to teaching children with autism and will continue to do so as I love working with your children.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that all students can learn and have appropriate behavior in the classroom when provided with supports and reinforcement for desired behavior if there are consistent behavior and performance expectations. In my classroom I use visual supports for lessons and behavior management. I use a token economy with “I am working for ______” cards, and “First, Then” cards. Part of the day my lessons focus on individual student goals from their IEP. In addition, I teach elements of standardized curriculum within a Modified format. I modify lessons from the standardized curriculum and easily adapted to each student’s level. I include areas of: health and safety, social science, science, language arts and communication, math, social skills, and independent self help skills within the standardized lessons that are presented to my students. While teaching I easily collect data on each student and their progress using personally created data sheets.
