I have twin 7 year old boys, one diagnosed with ASD and a potential diagnosis of ADHD, the second is diagnosed with Dyslexia and potentially ADD. We've been in speech therapy and occupational therapy for the past 5 years, and I've found that creating my own resources around my children's interests and level of understanding has helped them embrace the topics "of less interest" more readily. My children are mainstream schooled so my resources are created around the curriculum and therapy they are receiving (sometimes with an IT flair), but always with their "modern era" style in mind.
Find their strengths and interests and use those as the basis for teaching. Smart = a love of learning ... creativity shouldn’t be squashed in the process. Nurture creativity with literacy as the foundation… not the end goal.
Inclusive Community Champions Award from the Spinal Life Australia and the Lord Mayor for my business promoting "Things to do with kids". Golden Key honour Society - achieving top 15% in studies in Business and IT.
My professional background is Chartered Accountancy (8 years), Information Technology (12 years) and Journalism(5 years), however, since having children, my passion is ensuring that my kids can read and write, then on top of that... simply embracing their interests (which is anything relating to technology).
