I entered into the classroom as a paraprofessional in 2012 in a self contained special education classroom. After finishing my masters degree. I have taught in a self contained classroom for grades 3-5, taught general education for grades 3 and 4, and most recently I am building a K-12 special education department at a Charter School. I am so excited to see where this department can go.
My teaching style can be described as love over law. You will often find me signing to get students into the lesson and tell all my students to find "How Your Brain Works" and then use that strategy. I work with each students needs individually and try to incorporate life skills and social skills into as many lessons as possible. I believe that setting high standards for students and watching as they rise to the occasion, while still working within their appropriate range.
Rated as a effective/distinguished teacher for all teaching years on the LEAP scale in Denver Public Schools.
I graduated from University of Northern Colorado wth my Bachelor's Degree in History and from the University of Denver with my Master's in Curriculum and Instruction with a Special Education focus. I have a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Endorsement.
Whenever I meet someone new and I tell them what I do they quickly turn to me and tell me that I have "such a special heart" for working in the teaching, and especially the special education field. I have taken this identity to heart and now wear the badge of the "Special Heart" for loving my students and not caring who knows it. I hope that these products will find other people who have a similar heart and help us all push ourselves and our students to be better everyday. -Mrs. K
