Professor Tabelech “T.K. the Chemist” Shipp holds a Master of Life Science with dual concentrations in biology and chemistry from the University of Maryland at College Park and a Bachelor of Science in Professional Chemistry from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. As an educator with 30 years of combined teaching and educational experience, Professor “T.K. the Chemist” passion for science education has allowed her to expand her resume by teaching and empowering youth from pre-K through high school students and later on the collegiate level that STEM education is doable, one test tube experiment at a time! She has taught High School Chemistry, Physical Science & Earth and Environmental Science. She is also a former Adult Basic Education and GED Instructor. On the Collegiate level, she is currently a General Chemistry & General Biology and Anatomy and Physiology Professor. Professor T.K. the Chemist has written and developed science curriculum for teachers and other educational organizations. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the North Carolina Science Teachers Association and The Society for College Science Teachers.
To teach chemistry, or science for that matter, active learning is one method that I use as it encourages the diverse learning styles and abilities to seek information through higher critical thinking skills. Students have to take ownership in the learning process and that’s a collaborative effort on both the teacher and the students’ part. My pedagogical Socratic method of teaching implements an active learning environment that requires me to propose a series of questions without answers, while the student seeks the knowledge for him/herself. As a scholar of science education for over two decades, I have been able to develop a diverse educational background that would allow me to continue to provide a rigorous course while instilling the golden seal of excellence.
I am a two-time recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award for College Professors.
