My experience with math has occurred in many different directions: Homeschooled 2 children, K-12, one with significant dyslexia Taught in private school, grades 8, 10, and 12 Wrote, scored, and helped develop standardized math tests Tutor students with developmental delays, dyslexia, and ADHD
My first task with every new student is to watch them work - see how they think, how they express themselves, and how they deal with frustration. Most of my "new" ways of teaching common standards were motivated by trying to tutor students who were not succeeding in the classroom. I've developed special methods for teaching integer addition and subtraction, converting measurements, and factoring trinomials. Scoring standardized tests showed me that there are only rare "careless" mistakes. Most mistakes occur because of a lack of complete understanding of a concept.
