I had the honor of working at a nature center for nearly a decade helping teachers to integrate nature into their curriculum. Using local weather patterns, ecosystems, flora and fauna we fulfilled the science standards (NGSS) for Michigan. I also helped integrate science into their reading, writing, and math times to help save them time throughout the day.
I have a passion for helping teachers save time by integrating science into their reading and writing units. By weaving science into your other subjects you are creating a story that children will remember and you're also finding ways to get more science into their day; something all children need to develop critical thinking skills. I also LOVE teaching thematically and see the true benefit to integrating hands on and nature experiences for all ages. I believe that providing children with authentic experiences in the real-world, or experiences simulated to reflect the real-world, will give them the opportunity to build connections with the material and have a better understanding of how it is applied.
In 2019 I was recognized by the Great Lakes Region of the National Association for Interpretation with the Outstanding New Interpreter Award for my contributions to advance the profession of interpretation. Nominated by my peers, I was honored to accept this recognition for integrating nature into elementary science curriculums for local districts as well as developing standards-based field trips for schools throughout Michigan.
