In 25 years of public school teaching, I have taught over 20 different secondary language arts courses, including creative writing, 9-12 English, journalism, WR 121, and alternative education English. I'm the author of 17 books about Oregon. I teach writing workshops in the community and at various colleges and universities. I've faciliated many non-fiction writing workshops for teachers.
I believe in direct personal engagement with students is the best way to teach writing. Whether the students are responding to a short text, prompts, quotes, images, movement, sounds, etc, a successful writing teacher connects the material to students' lives and engages them in a lively, interactive manner. That teacher should also write with students and become part of the process.
In 2009, I won the state's highest literary honor for my contributions to Oregon history and literature. I've also won multiple teaching awards during my career.

In 2003 I established Nestucca Spit Press, an independent publishing company that publishes books about Oregon. We've since sold 30,000 books in Oregon. I work with many aspiring authors to prepare their manuscripts for publication and provide editorial consulting to businesses.
