TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As an educator for the past 18 years, I have experienced the ebb and flow of educational practices and realize that true success comes from witnessing children becoming independent thinkers and life long learners. I have had the opportunity to work with children in pre-school. kindergarten, 4/5 combo classes, and am currently working with 5th grade students and curriculum.

MY TEACHING STYLE

As a current 5th grade teacher I pride myself in creating an environment where children know that support is always available, but that the ultimate goal is take ownership of their own learning and value the lessons gained from mistakes. My goal is to provide them with the tools to be true scholars and citizens of good character while using their creativity and critical thinking skills to collaborate and communicate ideas in a variety of ways.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I am currently positioned as the district elementary lead teacher for my school site and am responsible for training my staff in using "thinking maps" for enhancing and organizing cognitive thinking skills. I was also honored with the award of "Teacher of the Year" by my colleagues in 2007.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I am a Suma Cum Laude graduate from the University of Rhode Island and earned a Masters degree in reading from Cal State Fullerton

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

As a Rhode Island native I enjoyed the winter snow and summer sun, but realized after I graduated that I had shoveled enough snow if my life so I headed west. I met and married a fellow RI native and after 18 years we are blessed with 3 beautiful daughters ages 16, 13, and 10 and even with our busy, hectic schedules we still remember to find time to put our toes in the sand and enjoy the moments.
