I have been teaching high school English/Language Arts since August 2006: 9--12, practically all levels, including Standard, Regular, CP, Pre-AP, AP Lit, etc. My STAAR scores X 5 years: 2018: 93% (Pre-AP only); 80% (Pre-AP and CP combined); School average: 59% passing: 21 points higher than average @ McAllen High School. 2017: 83% passing (Pre-AP and "Regular" combined; School average: 44% passing: 39 points higher than average @ Weslaco East High School. 2016: 72% passing (Pre-AP and "Regular" and EOC seniors [re-testers] combined); School average: 42% passing: 30 points higher than average @ Weslaco East High School. 2015: 72% passing (Pre-AP and "Regular" and EOC juniors [re-testers] combined); School average: 40% passing: 32 points higher than average @ Weslaco East High School. 2014: Sophomores: went from 79% passing to 83% passing @ IDEA Mission. Previously, I was a newspaper journalist and also taught adult ESL classes. I'm the author of You Know What I'm Sayin'? (amazon) and do editing. A also founded a nonprofit and a poetry fest with friends: (Rio Grande Valley International Poetry Festival).

I'm available to travel and conduct readings and/or workshops for teachers and students. Daniel Garcia Ordaz, a.k.a. The Poet Mariachi, was born in Houston, Texas in 1971 and raised in Mission, Texas. He is a teacher, former journalist, songwriter, photographicationisticator and word maker-upper. He is a founder of Art That Heals, Inc. an arts-minded nonprofit organization that also serves people with HIV & AIDS and he's also one of the founders of the Rio Grande Valley International Poetry Festival. As a newspaper reporter, Daniel's work was widely distributed by Freedom News Service, the Associated Press, and other news services. His poetry has been taught in universities across the country and even as far as Indonesia. Daniel served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves as a Hospital Corpsman. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The University of Texas-Pan American. He lives in McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley of deep South Texas with his wife, Gina, and their children and continues to write poetry and short stories, sing, and spend time in front of a crowd as often as he can.
