I have taught in education for 14 years, with two years in early childhood education and 11 years as a middle school math teacher.
I am currently an advisor, new author, as well as an early childhood educator in the homeschooling environment and educational consultant.
I enjoy working with educators providing them with teacher resources and coaching, and working with parents and families with resources and tools to help them succeed in supporting their students math learning and development as a whole.
I would describe my teaching style as foundational (faith, history, experience) with creativity and critical thinking skills.
I use questioning strategies to help my students pause and think before sharing out. I like to know what they think, what they know, or have learned. I also like using tunes/songs to help students remember how to solve the math problems they are presented with.
I like students to think-pair-share. Communication/collaboration is key in learning because when they can process and explain their understanding they can better be able to teach someone.
Also, hands-on activities, concrete application is important before transitioning into abstract. It provides the why. Vygotsky stated that activity generates thinking. When students are able to physically connect to the math that is deemed "too difficult" or "that new math" they are better able to understand and retain the procedural process, problem solve, and apply in various ways.
