TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My passion is creating learning experiences for students and teachers to elicit critical thinking, capacity growth, self-reflection, and to meet learning objectives through culturally responsive pedagogy. I have over 14 years of teaching experience including: Classroom teaching (ELA & humanities) ---- Substitute teaching ---- Instructor at Duke University Young Writers Camp ---- Instructor/facilitator of arts-based afterschool programs that work with students on topics of identity, race, schooling, and community ---- Instructor of developmental English at the community college level ---- instructor of Master's level teacher education classes at the university level. Also, I've had the privledge of working with first-year teachers in high needs, low income schools and providing professional development to teachers in the U.S. and India.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching style is student-centered and culturally responsive. I believe that all students can and want to be successful learners. This requires that access, engagement, and differentiation are continuously assessed and improved upon in order to create optimal learning environments and meaningful lessons.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

9 presentations at national education conferences ---- Published chapter on hidden curriculum in Nova Science's Psychology of Denial ---- With a small group of insanely smart women, won a $153,000 state level grant to implement a Literacy through Photography program in an alternative, last chance urban school ---- And, dearest to my heart: I've been recognized numerous times by school-level staff for creating successful learning environments for my students, espcially for students with learning difficulties, behavioral difficulties, those who have experienced trauma and/or homelessness, and students whose native language is not English.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

B.A. Secondary English Education (UNC Greensboro) ~ M.S. Secondary Curriculum & Instruction, English Education (N.C. State) ~ Ph.D. Curriculum & Instruction, Urban Education (UNC Charlotte)

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

When I'm not working on curriculum and helping teachers, I love traveling, listening to music, playing outside, and watching soccer!
