I currently teach at a highly rated college prep school in NC. My department and I were tired of textbooks so we wrote our own curriculum for Spanish 1-2 with the goal of getting students to a comfortable level of communicative fluency in two years. In addition to the lower levels, I also teach Honors Spanish 3 and AP Spanish Language & Culture (which replaced our Spanish 4 course), for which I also developed the curriculum from scratch. Our students graduate with high levels of fluency and often place out of university requirements (or place very high if they decide to only go through Spanish 2).
My primary goal is communicative fluency, both written and spoken. In my classes I have a partially flipped classroom format with traditional vocab and grammar video lessons. Students then spend in-class time applying and practicing the concepts through traditional worksheets and other written work, conversation and other speaking activities, and lots of partner/group work. Through these application activities, students are able to quickly develop reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills and retain the content much more effectively.
Yet to be added
I have a BA in Spanish and Anthropology and will soon be pursuing a Masters of Education.
In addition to teaching, I love all things related to Hispanic culture and I LOVE to travel internationally (Spanish-speaking areas and more)! I am also happily married to an English teacher, go figure!
