Ornicar is a publishing company created in London early 2014. Our ambition is to help kids discover languages and embrace bilingualism. We are specialised in materials for kids aged 2 to 8, based on funny bilingual characters called "the Zazoo". Our Zazoo materials are especially popular in France and in the UK where they are used in many schools.
We think we have an innovative approach to language learning. All books, activities and other materials revolving around the Zazoo include these 4 principles: 1. BILINGUALISM AND/OR NO TRANSLATION. As a kid, you found probably pretty boring to read a text in the language you were learning, then its translation in your mother tongue. And to be honest, it didn't make the learning process easier, right? The Zazoo books are bilingual books in a non-traditionnal way. Children won't focus on a dialogue and its translation. Instead, they will switch from their mother tongue to their target language in the story books or will only be exposed to their target language in the activity books. It's better to boost your children's language skills. It's also less teachy and boring than the traditional methods of language learning. The activities and card games are written in the target language only. 2. FUN & ALMOST EFFORTLESS. Sitting in front of a list of words or looking at traditionnal flashcards can be a total turn-off for some children. That's why we created joyful, bright and cute animals. We strongly believe that illustrations are essential for young children. They make the reading process more enjoyable: children have the impression to read a "normal" picture book. The activities including specific vocabulary are similar to those your children enjoy doing in their mother tongue: colouring pages, games, stickers... Although the language learning process must be consistent, fun exposure is essential! Otherwise, your children will get quickly bored. 3. EMOTIONAL LINK. The Zazoo are cheeky and funny characters your children will easily relate to: they share the same little worries and daily adventures. Plus, all Zazoo materials are especially designed to emphasize the interactions between parents and children. 4. USEFULNESS. What is important to kids is now, they are not thinking about future payoffs when it comes to learn a second language. That's why the priority is given to high-frequency words and to simple and lively sentences in the books and activities. Children will be able to use what they learnt in their daily life. Plus, our materials sometimes focuse on cultural aspects: children will be able to link their second language to people from their family and/or a country and/or a trip they made or will make.
The founder of our publishing company was named one of the most influential French people in London by the famous French magazine "L'Express" in 2015.
