I've taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ELAR, where I covered both writing and promoting literacy in the classroom. I also had a yearbook class, a broadcast media class, and a newspaper class, which I loved teaching. I have also taught 5th and 8th grade science. I have also been responsible for interventions- working with kids who, as a campus, we were trying different strategies to see if they qualified for 504 or special education services. In addition to this, I have been fortunate to work with college students as a mentor in the field of journalism.
I am very much a hands on teacher. Since most of my experience has been working a low income schools, it is imperative to engage my students and make learning applicable to them. So, if you were to walk in my classroom, you would see lots of color, music and movement. Controlled mayhem has been used to describe my classroom. :-) I enjoy getting to know my students and sharing information about my life, especially my kids, with them. I think it helps them "buy in" to being there and helps keep them engaged.
I was awarded the New Teacher of the Year award in 2008 and was nominated for Teacher of the Year 2011-2012 by my peers.
I am a graduate of Baylor University, class of 2005. I completed my alternative certification program in 2006 and began teaching in Texas.
I am a mom to almost 6 year old triplets who just finished their first year of kindergarten, and a 15 month old little girl. I have been married to my wonderful husband for 10 years and we live in Texas. I love to knit, read, and have recently become obsessed with making changes to make my family and household use more natural products and practice clean living. I feel my job as a teacher is to prepare students for life outside the four walls of the classroom. I want my students to become successful, contributing members of society.
