I am a recent graduate from a Childhood Education Master’s program as well as a full time substitute teacher. In the spring of this past year, I completed my student teaching at an urban elementary school and was selected to participate in an urban residency program through my college where I worked with urban students in first through fifth grade classrooms and collaborated with other teaching professionals. Throughout my graduate program, I worked closely with several different districts in the Capital Region where I promoted the use of technology through after school programs and created my own robotics curriculum which supports the NYS Common Core Standards and hands-on learning. I am continuously searching for new opportunities to give back to the community and to incorporate service learning and project based learning opportunities for students to benefit from in their classroom. Throughout my teaching experiences, I have always implemented new and engaging lesson plans which follow NYS Common Core Standards and support the integration of core subjects. Although I don't have the opportunity yet to create my very own classroom atmosphere, I continue to practice all my teaching methods in anyway I can and create new lesson ideas each and every day.
My teaching methods encourage students to have a community of respect for themselves and one another in the classroom and to strive to expand their own knowledge and foster integrity. I highly support hands-on learning and for students to be able to utilize what they are learning across all subjects. An effective and fundamental teaching strategy that I use in my classroom is individualized instruction to aid my students with different learning styles. In order to meet the individual needs of students, lessons should be differentiated by incorporating auditory, kinesthetic and visual techniques. Using this teaching model, students should be provided with the opportunities to work individually and in group settings to build strength in these different learning areas. Applying these different approaches to the learning process will allow students the opportunity to seek and understand on an independent level as well as a whole group. Using a cooperative learning strategy with other classrooms will also support this type of learning. In my classroom, I would also integrate technology into the daily lives of my students and support all new opportunities of learning through technology. Through the use of guided individualized instruction, students should be provided an environment where self-discovery and hands-on approaches to learning are essential to the overall learning process.
