I taught Junior High Social Studies at Iowa School for the Deaf and later taught elementary school Gifted and Talented classes as a volunteer. With the support of my Sunday School Superintendent I threw out the formal curriculum and created my own lessons for our fifth grade class. Before retiring from my position as Professional Development Coordinator for VSA arts of Iowa, I assisted our art and music educators in developing curriculum for Continuing Education summer classes. I retired for a new career as a storyteller. Now I also volunteer in the schools and at a Speech and Language Clinic where I work with a client who is in elementary school. Some of the enrichment lessons that I created for her will be adapted for TpT.
I'm an advocate of Gardner's "Multiple Intelligences" theory that all children have different strengths and learning styles. Therefore, I integrated art, music and hands on activities into my lessons for learners of all abilities. My goal is to ignite student interest and engage them in learning that coordinates with the Common Core Standards.
My greatest satisfaction is seeing reluctant students come alive and actively engage in learning.
I have a B.S. from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. My major is in History with a minor in Deaf Education. My M.A. is in Special Education with a minor in History from the same institution.
Now that I have tons of spare time, I enjoy reading, writing, traveling, Zumba, hiking, and knitting. TpT is a new venture for me. I'm digging through files for my favorite projects, ideas, and teaching units. I look forward to updating these materials and sharing them with you!
