TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Pat Maier:Taught French 1-5 for 30 plus years, including honors FR 2 & 3 and Advanced Placement French Language.More often than not my students receive 100% passage rate on the AP exam. For years I was Foreign Language Department Head as well as Mentor Teacher. I have done translation French-English for French and American Companies. Have been WASC coordinator and lastly, a university teaching assistant................................ ..................................................Viv Rakocija: Taught Spanish and French for over 35 years. One of first in district to use total immersion approach to teaching of second languages. Never found a textbook that didn't make me want to supplement and enrich the existing curriculum and started doing this my student teaching days. I always incorporated an oral evaluation component in my own program and continued to expand upon that as the years went on. Pat and I have been colleagues for most of my 35 years of experience and her mentoring helped me further advance the cause of making my own teaching skills richer and more comprehensive. I taught all levels of junior high and high school Spanish and levels 1-3 French. I tutored extensively in all levels of both languages including AP prep. Although I majored in the French language, I remained in Spanish the majority of my teaching career as there were many sections of Spanish to fewer of French available. My most rewarding moments were listening to and evaluating my students while they did their oral presentations or worked together to present cultural and historical topics in the target language. Those moments made me beam with delight.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Pat Maier:I have never used an Am. text book-- too many mistakes and never challenging enough. I have created my own materials and my own standards. If you ask little of your students in terms of performance they will give you little. If you ask for the moon and show you really care about their success they will give you not only the moon but the stars as well. I only speak French in the classroom even in French 1. I'm old fashioned. I never assume a student knows anything. I test comprehensively orally and in writing as well as review all the time. I teach grammar, I use translation . My students have almost never let me down. ........................................................................................ Viv Rakocija: I employed a lot of dramatics and physicality in my teaching style especially the early levels. Although I did not have the freedom to set aside the textbook as a teaching tool and rely exclusively on my own materials, I found the supplementary materials that you will be seeing on our site easy to incorporate and much more rewarding to use. I gave written and oral evaluations that were comprehensive and required students to have good retention of vocabulary they had already learned as well as were presently learning.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Pat Maier: Four times attended the South Bay Golden Apple banquet representing my school as the outstanding teacher of the year.Selected as Dept Chair by my peers eleven years in a row. Recognized by the School board in my district for my work as Dept Chair. Selected as mentor teacher eleven times by my district.Nominated three times for Teacher of the year in my School district. Asked by the AP people to fill in with a how to pass the AP French language exam for an ill speaker at a conference.............................................................................. Viv Rakocija: My greatest honor and reward has been to have been able to have Pat as my colleague and mentor. She validated everything I'd ever believed about how to be truly successful in producing second language learners. She encouraged me to follow a path I had always felt was a truer path toward this goal and made me a better teacher.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Pat Maier: Paris American High School BA French Language & European History MA French Language & Literature MA School Admin. Certificat d'Études Supérieures Institut de Touraine........................................ Viv Rakocija: San Pedro High School BA French Language at University of California, Long Beach MA in Curriculum Development at St. Thomas University Participated in study abroad programs in Paris (one year) and Mexico City (summer).

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Pat Maier:I lived in France as a young person because my Dad was stationed at SHAPE HQ in Fontainebleau France for 5yrs. Participated as an Assistante d'Anglais in Besancon France. I created a Travel and Exchange program for my students: 'Madame's Folly" [7weeks;17 times] I live pretty much one foot here and one foot in France and Switzerland......................................... Viv Rakocija: I was blessed to have been reared speaking a second language. In my case, that language was Croatian. I feel my life was forever enriched by this and I always tried to share that experience with my students. By sharing I mean not only the language itself but the rich cultural experience that knowing the language brought with it. As a result of the ties I have formed with family still in Croatia, I feel I have a second homeland. I also accompanied Pat on one of her "Follies" and what a fortunate and unique experience that was for any student.
