TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Freetown-Lakeville Middle School: Lakeville, Massachusetts Computer Science/Technology Teacher: September 1986 to Present I teach Computer Science and Computer Graphics classes to students in grades 6, 7, and 8. This includes instruction in creating PowerPoint presentations, using and creating spreadsheets and databases, and posting to blogs and wikis. Students work with sound and graphics files to create multimedia presentations and use Adobe Fireworks and Flash to create simple animated files.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Having moved from a special education background into my current position as computer science teacher, I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with students who demonstrate a wide range of ability. I know from direct experience that all students can succeed. However, in order to reach their potential, students need high but realistic expectations and challenging but reachable goals. Success fosters more success and the more appropriately differentiated the instruction, the more desirable the likely outcomes. One of my original reasons for embracing technology was the recognition of its potential to assist me in reaching students in new and better ways. Although definitely not a substitute for good teaching skills, the appropriate use of technology can help engage students and hold their interest. When properly integrated, technology tools can make learning more authentic and meaningful. If my students are not asking “What are we learning this for?”, then I know I’m on the right track. Technology should never be an add-on or afterthought but, ideally, is an integral and necessary part of the project.
