I've been teaching since 2002, but had to take a year off when I moved from a rural community back to the suburbs of Chicago. I can't believe that this is my 12th year in education! I've worked for the last 8 years in a small school district with rapidly changing demographics. The downturn in the economy has affected a number of our families, and we have had a huge influx of immigrants in recent years, which is changing how I teach, as I strive to meet various students' needs. My student teaching was with juniors and seniors in high school. I was involved in an intensive student teaching program, so I spent the whole school year with those students. I taught U.S. History and Government. I've taught 6th and 7th grade in recent years; the subjects have been reading, language arts, and social studies. I've also been teaching the interventions for reading and writing the last 4 years. I have an MsED, which makes me a certified reading specialist. In addition, I have begun to work on an endorsement for English Language Learners. I lead a teachers group called "Teachers as Readers," which is a book club for teachers using young adult literature. This helps keep me current and the incentive for teachers to participate is getting new books for their classroom. Finally, I am the sponsor of our school newspaper, "The General."
I use a variety of techniques depending on my students' needs. It usually consists of whole class instruction, modeling, and independent work. I prefer to give my students choices with assignments, but I also think there is a place for some memorization of very specific terms such as genre and text structure types and figurative language. I'm not a huge proponent of memorizing vocabulary, but prefer to teach students to use context clues.
I graduated with honors in both my undergraduate and graduate studies.
