I graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor's Degree in English with minors in Communication and Writing. After graduating, I realized I wanted to go into teaching (because that's what you do with a degree in English, right?!) So I continued with my education and received my teaching license in 2011. After I received my teaching licence, I continued my time in full-time education and worked towards my Master's Degree in Education with an endorsement in reading. When I completed all of my required courses for my Master's Degree, I married a British citizen (gotta love that accent!) and moved to Newcastle, England. I quickly realized that my American teaching license (although valid in England) was going to be difficult for me to utilize due to the numerous differences in schooling structure between the two countries. So, to begin my journey into the British education system, I took on a job in a secondary school as a Learning Mentor. I was unsure of what the role entailed, and so I decided to finish up my Master's Degree by completing my thesis on the role of the Learning Mentor. My paper is entitled, "The Role of the Sixth Form Learning Mentor: Evaluating the Guidance Needs of Older Students." The closest resemblance a Learning Mentor holds to an American school would be that of a school counselor (a thread I explored in my paper). So while I did not get my Master's Degree in School Counseling, I do feel as though I am in a unique position to be able to comment on the type of resources that would be beneficial to school counselors. All of that to say : I'm a qualified American teacher living in England and working as a Learning Mentor at a secondary school. (English majors are wordy, aren't we?)
