My name is Susan Perritano and I have twenty-one years of public school teaching experience. I have worked with children who are Gifted and Talented, Bilingual, and Inclusion Special Education Students. Currently, I am currently teaching second grade at Sandy Grove Elementary in North Carolina.
I am an educator who believes that it is possible to affect growth and learning for all students and teachers. Teachers can entice unwilling readers by using an approach developed by the Quantum Learning Company. Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences tells how students have a variety of strengths. The intelligences are each oriented to a specific type of information: linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, spatial, bodily kinesthetic, naturalistic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. Howard Gardner says, “[You] learn best when you have something you care about and you can get pleasure from being engaged in it.” (Gardner & Morgan, 2006). Through Inquiry Based Learning, students find the knowledge for themselves as opposed to me feeding it to them. Students collaborate on projects and learn to problem solve using group dynamics. Students will write goals on how they will take their idea and turn it into a multimedia production. Research on their topic will be done using the Internet, Library Books, Encyclopedias, and textbooks. This communication skill will prepare them for future business presentations. High expectations in the classroom lead to increased student achievement. When students are encouraged to do inquiry based projects, they are more motivated to attain knowledge through reading. Cross-curricular learning meets this goal.

I have been happily married since 1986. My husband’s job promotions have allowed us to relocate first to Oregon and now to North Carolina. I enjoy traveling with my family to places across the United States and Mexico.
