TEACHING EXPERIENCE

23 years

MY TEACHING STYLE

The interesting thing in my life is that during all my graduate and postgraduate studies I was almost always teaching or tutoring mathematics, physics, and computer programming. This is an interesting on going experience, because when I see a student struggling with something that looks trivial or mundane I remember when I was struggling with something that later became clear. ‘I was blind but now I see’ is my motto, I try to convey this any time I am explaining a concept or solving a problem. It is not about the problem itself but the idea of going from darkness to clearness. I always try to find a parallelism to a previous similar situation: it is a mathematical or algebraic issue, did I do an experiment in this area, do I have the previous knowledge to tackle the problem, or if the problem is out of my league. Surprising, most of the time is the student lack of mathematical knowledge what limits their understanding of physics, the ability to solve advanced problems, and critically analyze experimental results. Once I identify what is causing the struggle, I don’t tell the student right away but walk him through inquiry and questioning rather than given him/her the solution. This inquiring-questioning tends to make them independent and less relying on me.
