2017 - Present: HS Computer Science Teacher (Pike County Schools, Indiana) 2014 - 2016: Adjunct / Lecturer in Art and Music (Oakland City University)
I strive to maintain an open and collaborative classroom that allows students to explore their interests and discover potential career paths. As a first-year high school teacher, I'm still working to find the right balance between freedom and structure. I want my students to become independent thinkers and self-learners, but I also want them to stay on task and be productive. The majority of my instruction is project-based, allowing students to learn through hands-on exposure to technology. I rely on the scaffolding technique to give them increasingly challenging problems to solve and autonomy. As for my role in the classroom, I see myself as a mentor and guide on my students' journey to self-discovery. I would rather give students the resources to learn for themselves than to spoon feed them. Since technology is a fast-paced, ever-changing field, it is vital that my students leave my classroom equipped to keep up with the latest innovations.
