TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience run the gamut. I hold a Master of Science in Education from Bank Street College. I taught 3rd-5th grade for eight years. I've also been an Educational Consultant, working with museums, most notably the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. My specialities include curriculum development and integrating technology into the classroom including mobile devices and apps. I am dedicated to creating child-centered learning environments with a focus on integrated and inclusive learning.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe students learn best through interactive, hands-on learning. The lessons I write reflect this philosophy. As classroom teacher I tried to create an environment where my students felt free to explore their interests and experiment. Critical and creative thinking skills were intertwined across the content areas. I set high expectations for my students and helped them achieve their goals by differentiating activities to meet a variety of learning styles.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Filmed as part of the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum's "Design in the Classroom" teacher and principal outreach program. Video is available to the public on the Cooper-Hewitt's YouTube Channel: http://bit.ly/yK1QkA

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

2001: Bank Street College of Education, Master of Science in Education 1994: State University of New York at Albany, B.A.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

When I am not teaching or writing, I can be found happily knitting, gardening, designing air plant pieces, running, reading or looking at the Hudson River, which I live right next to. When I'm really lucky I'm traveling. Visit my site to see my air plant projects! www.popgardens.com Linkedin: http://www.linkedin.com/in/joannaburgess Twitter: https://twitter.com/Stanks
