TEACHING EXPERIENCE

We are Marilyn and Jim, a colleagues and partners who love working collaboratively on learning projects.

Marilyn and Jim are both experienced teachers. Jim specializes in math and has worked as a teacher, principal, teacher trainer, and consultant for over 50 years. Jim currently works as a math consultant to schools in Vermont and New Hampshire and also works individually with several students with special needs.

Marilyn has been an educator since 1972. She has experience as a classroom teacher, private tutor, teacher trainer, reading specialist and consultant. She also has a strong background in special education and a focus on students at risk for reading and students with dyslexia. She has recently retired from her position at Neshobe Elementary School in Brandon, Vermont and is now working part time for the Stern Center for Language and Learning in Williston, Vermont.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Our instruction follows the principles of SEAL - systematic, explicit, authentic, and lively! We all focus on instruction that starts with simple ideas, progresses to more complex ones, and ultimately leads children to deep conceptual understanding. We use questioning and guided discovery to foster development of concepts about print, text, and mathematical ideas. We ask children to engage with materials, print, and ideas in authentic classroom and real-world tasks. We also believe in explicit and abundant practice in a variety of tasks and activities to bring concepts to a level of skill.
