I have been teaching kindergarten for the last five years. Before that, I taught 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and art. I must admit my true love is kinder! There is just something magical about a student first becoming a reader that can't be found in any other grade level. :)
I believe guided reading / small group instruction is where you truly build relationships, learn skill levels, and move your students. I focus my resources on guided reading materials and meaningful centers because it fits closely with how I use most of my instruction time. Because I teach at a title I, behaviors and circumstances can often take away from instruction time. I am a firm believer that visual directions, procedures, rotations, and routines, and references can stop these interruptions before they start. This is why many resources in my store include picture instructions for my non-readers who need to engage in an independent task. This is also the reason I have several visual anchor charts for classroom procedures and routines. My automatic centers rotation PowerPoint has been a game-changer!
