I spent 6 years at DSST Public Schools, creating a full Spanish 1-4 curriculum and standards, as well as a 3 year native speakers track. I have achieved consistently outstanding student data on the AP Spanish Language Examination. Working as the Department Chair for 6 years and concurrently developing network-wide assessments for the Spanish program as Content Lead, I have experienced every facet of the creation and implementation of a multi-level, multi-school Spanish program.
Education is Social Justice. I allow students to find their academic voice through use of consistent routine and procedures that allow for development and maintenance of academic language in Spanish. Students use their academic voice to discover and master content through a wide variety of topics and assessment styles. My hope, through teaching, is that my students will use what they learned in the classroom to go out into the larger world and make it a better place for everyone.
My shining moment in the classroom was when I gained the highest achievement in Denver Public Schools for AP Spanish Language Examination with a 97% pass rate, despite a student population that was 60% Free and Reduced Lunch.
Besides my dedication to life-long learning I also hold degrees and certifications. I have a Bachelor's of Arts in Spanish from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and am certified to teach K-12 Spanish in Colorado. I spent two semesters studying at the Universidad de Costa Rica, and am certified in Linguistically Diverse Education.
