My overarching goal is to challenge and support students as they seek to discern the next stage of their journey and prepare themselves to lead fulfilling lives as engaged citizens of the world. In the context of my discipline, this entails developing the language proficiency required to communicate effectively in Spanish and the cultural proficiency needed to function comfortably in Spanish-speaking communities and to appreciate the rich diversity of Spanish and Latinx cultures. I accomplish this by creating an active learning environment based on dialogue and discussions about topics and issues that are relevant to my students in the target language, while I myself maintain 95-100% target language use. My classroom will move beyond rote grammar and vocabulary instruction into a more holistic, culturally embedded experience where students learn language through thematic instruction. That is, instead of learning grammar and vocabulary in isolated contexts, they will learn it as a means to explore and discuss the essential questions of our unit. Students will be immersed in the language in meaningful contexts, which will facilitate the transfer of communicative capacity in the real world.
