TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am an experienced drama teacher of more years than I care to state. In 2013, I decided to publish a book of my own poetry as a teacher, I knew there was a gap in the market. I've since published five more poetry books and numerous teacher resources. I visit schools doing fun poetry performances for students, and running writing workshops, that are mainly poetry and drama based. I also offer PD workshops on introducing drama into the classroom. I still continue to teach drama privately as well as in schools, and love getting students ready for performance. I judge both drama festivals, and also at many school speech and/or poetry competitions.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I place the emphasis on fun, as I firmly believe that children learn better when that element is present. They feel less threatened and take messages on board more easily. Once they 'get into' humorous or light poetry, their minds are more open to serious verse. Rhyme is known to be one of the most useful tools in a child's language journey.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Runner up National poetry competition. Poem was published in an ece publication. ATCL practical speech and drama I am a Duffy Books In Homes role model throughout New Zealand.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I learnt drama from the age of 10, right through to ATCL. I have participated in improvisation training workshops run by professional actors. I went on to be a certified High School improvisation tutor. I have attended summer school writing workshops. I continue to attend writing workshops by successful authors when time permits.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I've been involved in theatre most of my life, from writing, directing, acting, down to making the tea. Team work is what makes any production/project successful, and that is a message I use in any of my schools visits or workshops. I also write school productions, and when possible run stagecraft workshops, and have worked as a consultant to assist the directors. Over the last few years I've visited well over 200 schools, and have a good understanding of children. I listen to what teachers say they can't find resources for, then work from there, providing them with what fills those gaps in many cases. I have a passion for language, poetry and prose, or speeches, helping kids be the best they can be.
