TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My experience includes group and individual tutoring, observations, and years of being a parent, informal teacher, and volunteer. I have worked with children for almost 25 years. I graduated from Illinois State's College of Education. During my time as a student and pre-service teacher I worked with 2-4 grades with the majority of my time as a year-long intern/student teacher for 6th grade contained classroom in an intermediate school setting.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am a hands-on learner and teacher. I believe in creating a connection between the student and lessons taught. Lessons should draw upon a student's background knowledge to teach today and prepare the student for tomorrow. Learning is to extend beyond the classroom - pulling from the past and present to take children into the future. Most importantly, learning and work needs an element of fun (so says Mary Poppins).

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I am a recent graduate from the elementary education program at Illinois State University. My senior year was spent in an internship in an upper elementary school teaching 6th grade although I spent some time in a 2nd grade classroom as well. At ISU I was a member of the the Honors Program, Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, and Tau Sigma Honor Society. I graduated in May 2014 with the following honors: Summa Cum Laude (3.95 GPA), Departmental Honors in Elementary Education, Honors Scholar, and Honors Scholar with Merit. In 2013 my in-course honors project - an integrated language arts and social studies unit based on Peter Menzel's What the World Eats - won recognition in the Honors program as most creative for 2013 in-course honor projects at ISU. I graduated with honors in December 2011 from ICC where I was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta honor societies. I was on the President's List (4.0 GPA) every semester in attendance at ICC. In June 2011, I received a national scholarship from the National Association of Community Colleges Teacher Education Program.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
