TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am an elementary school teacher in Miami Florida and this is my sixth year in teaching elementary education. I taught fourth grade my first year of teaching, and now I currently teach 5th grade at Coconut Grove Elementary School in Miami Florida. I teach fifth grade mathematics and science and I absolutely love it! After teaching for a few years now, I've come to the realization that I have to walk into my school every day trying to be a positive role model to my 5th grade students. This includes : appearance, attitude, communication, and so much more. I know that as a teacher, I have to play a vital part in preparing my students for their future. In addition, I've also learned that it is my responsibility in creating a supportive classroom environment.  A warm, safe, and caring environment allows students to influence the nature of the activities they undertake, engage seriously in their study, regulate their behavior, and know of the explicit criteria and high expectations of what they are to achieve. I believe that students should be taught about the importance of different perspectives. Seeing new points of view can be truly eye-opening.  I strive to make the environment of my classroom mirror a community, with students being productive members. Therefore, when a problem arises, I try to guide my students in solving it in a professional manner.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I try to teach my students to possess self-respect, respect of others, and show a strong will for what they believe in. These traits can be accomplished through group discussions, one-on-one talks with students, and the learning of different perspectives within my classroom. I also take into account the individuality of all students.  Students have diverse needs and I try to accommodate each one as successfully as possible by incorporating learner-centered experiences as well as narrative and pragmatic modes of thinking. In my classroom, students receive direct instruction followed by some guided instruction until they become independent learners. To accomplish these goals, I use technology (smart-board, computers), multi-tasking, working in cooperative groups, hands-on activities, Inquiry labs (during science time), open-ended questions, and the usage of manipulatives to help students become strategic learners. With my daily instruction, I also try to make new concepts relevant to the future, and ask them an essential question every day in each subject in order to engage them in the lesson. My goal as a 5th grade math and science teacher is to give my students the opportunity to gain meaningful learning.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

My name is Denise Raposo and I was born in Miami Florida. I have been teaching elementary education for six years now, and I can honestly say that teaching young minds is my true passion! Ever since I was a little girl, I loved to play teacher with my siblings and always gravitated towards children. I have three siblings including my amazing twin sister. On my spare time I enjoy spending quality time with my family, going to museums, and spending time in the outdoors. I am Cuban-American and love everything about the Cuban Culture. My parents were both born and raised in Cuba and came to the United States when they were both in their late twenties. Till this day, we have a few traditions that we follow and participate in, which definitely keeps our family strong, positive, and closer together. My favorite subject to teach is science. I love seeing my students reactions and levels of engagement whenever they participate in lab inquiries or discover and learn something new. Science is a time in which my fifth grade students and myself can escape reality for just a little bit and truly have fun!
