I have taught sixth grade language arts for six years and eighth grade language arts and social studies for four years. This experience was in a Title I school. I currently work as a learning team facilitator where I help teachers in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade unpack standards, design differentiated lessons, create authentic performance tasks, and analyze classroom data to drive instruction.
I am an advocate of the Reading and Writing Workshop models. I believe in looking at each student as an individual, identifying his/her learning needs, and moving instruction forward from there. To do so, I draw heavily from Carol Tomlinson's differentiation strategies and utilize standards-based grading as outlined by Rick Wormeli and Ken O'Connor. I am a constructivist. I believe that students construct meaning through opportunities for disequilibrium, challenging content (with scaffolds), and rich discussions.
