I've taught third grade for five years.
I believe in developing relationships with the kids before you try to help them learn anything. Kids learn best from people they like and respect and in an atmosphere that's loving and accepting. I believe that the best way to become a better reader is to practice reading with a knowledgeable coach by your side, so that's how I try to center my reading instruction - we read a lot, and I guide them through the tricky spots so that they can grow as readers. I also believe in keeping things as simple as possible. At the root of all good reading instruction is a kid with a book!
I'm honored to have been selected as one of Tennessee's 9 Teacher of the Year finalists. I was selected to serve on Governor Haslam's inaugural Teacher's Cabinet, and I've had an article published in the "Tennessee Reading Journal" on the best practices for implementing sustained silent reading in the classroom. I was also the recipient of a classroom grant from my local Delta Kappa Gamma chapter.
My undergraduate degree is in history from the University of Mississippi, and my masters is in curriculum and instruction from the University of Tennessee at Martin. I'm also an endorsed reading specialist for grades K-12.
I'm the mom of three wonderful children and I'm married to a fantastic guy! In my spare time, I love to read and run. Every purchase that you make helps to provide high-quality materials for the students in my classroom. Whether it's Scholastic books, new technology, or something in between, anything new and fresh is always welcome. My students and I thank you!! I'd love for you to stop by my blog Read, Run, Teach and like myFacebook page, too.
