These are comprehension/discussion questions for the graphic novel American Born Chinese. These questions prompt students to recognize the 3 distinct narratives in the story and how they connect at the end to communicate the author's message.

Finally, a guide to Hamilton for English teachers! This is an amazing play, and this guide will make it much easier for students to navigate it, either as a whole class or in guided reading/literature circle groups! I read and listened to Hamilton

I’ve used these notes as a way to organize my small group discussions (keeping this in my binder and not sharing with students) and as a guide for students to use to prepare for discussions. They can easily be cut and pasted to give to students in

This is an awesome activity to get your kids excited to give speeches and review how to persuade others. I did this around March Madness time, but it's great any time you want to revisit stories (and perfect for the end of the year). It covers lots

This is a fantastic graphic novel for students of varying ability--I used it with my 6th-8th graders and lower readers had enough background knowledge of the women to understand most of it and the art/questions/text was complex enough to challenge

I made this guide to complement my read aloud of Liar and Spy. It focuses on the author's message and has good tie-ins to art. A pointillism project would be a logical extension art project at the end of the year.

I’ve used this for several years with my guided reading groups and have found them to be quite useful. These “post-it pages” really give me a sense of the depth of a student’s understanding of a novel and the depth of their analysis. I have changed

This is one of my favorite books of all time, and I simply adore teaching it. It is complex enough that I only do it with one (or two) of my highest guided reading groups at the end of 8th grade, and the guide is a huge help. This guide is geared

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching Reading/Language Arts for 11 years. I LOVE teaching middle school and the huge range of maturity and skill sets that includes. I have students in the 5th-99th percentile and write reading guides that meet them where they are and push them to go deeper. I want all students to access deep concepts without being burdened with busy work. I'm a busy mom and share work I've done that makes my classroom run more purposefully and productively. I hope you enjoy!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I make guided reading guides with questions that dig deep and prompt discussion. I also focus my speaking and writing on clear claims and evidence, and these show in my questions.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Teacher of the Year at my school (2013) Chicago Foundation for Education ARLI Action Research Fellow (2014) Chicago Foundation for Education Small Grant Winner for novels and robots (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) and presenter at symposium (using graphic novels in middle school reading--2016) Presented to my school staff on Backwards Design for 3 hour PD (2017)

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I studied English, sociology, and education in undergraduate and earned a masters in middle school science education. I am also ELL endorsed.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am a mom to two lively small children, so I value efficiency at home and at school. I love being a teacher and a mom, but juggling these roles isn't always easy. I share resources with you that have made my life easier and the time in front of my students effective. Each purchase you make helps me expand my classroom library (and put diapers on my baby!).
