I have taught Elementary School Students in grades 2-5 for the past 20 years, in Florida. 17 of those years were working with Special Needs students. I am now a Reading Specialist working in a Title I School focusing on the improving the reading skills of the struggling reader. Watching a blooming reader sprout is the greatest gift!
I am very passionate and enthusiastic about having each student acquire a love for reading. I celebrate little steps which ultimately lead to greater successes. Building the confidence of my readers who have thought or heard many times before that they cannot read and transforming them into a more confident successful reader is my greatest accomplishment.
I have received many awards... Humble that I am, I will just list them because there is a space to do so. I am certified in Exceptional Student Education K-12, Elementary Education, Reading K-12 and ESOL Endorsed. In 2003, I became Nationally Board Certified in Early Childhood to Young Adult with Exceptional Needs. In 2007, I won the William T. Dwyer Award for Excellence in Education. (Which means I was the selected as the Top Teacher in our county that year, it was like an Academy Award Event) I am not an Academy Award like person! In 2010, I was selected as the Outstanding Professional Educator Alumni from Florida Atlantic University. In 2011, I was nominated for the Teacher of the Year. And each day I stand or sit in front of 50 students and watch their skills improve!
I graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 2009 with my Master's Degree in Reading. I graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 1992 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Exceptional Student Education.
I work at Florida's first LEED certified school. Our focus is on Environmental Science and being good stewards of the Earth. The OWL is our Mascot so you will see them used a lot in my work! I have aloving husband, 2 teenage children, 3 dogs (greyhound, bluetick hound, and a german shepard mix), and 4 cats! Yes, my house is like a ZOO!!!
