I am a reading specialist for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. I work with students in an encore class setting, helping them sharpen their reading skills in authentic ways. This is my 10th year in the classroom & my 2nd in my current position. I have worked in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classrooms--both in the areas of social studies and language arts. I'm thankful to be in a position which allows me to utilize my Masters in Reading Ed every single day!
I am just about as anti-worksheet as they come. However, well-crafted graphic organizers and thoughtful discussion guides are essentials in our classroom. I believe collaborative learning is an integral part of adolescent-focused learning. Students should work hard, but have fun. I believe reading is a possibility for all students, but that we all have areas for personal growth and improvement. All students should have access to grade level materials and also to any activities/resources needed to help them catch up on or extend their learning.

I am a self-proclaimed "word nerd" who loves to read and write. Middle school was a struggle for me because I didn't find traditional schooling to be a challenge...or to be much fun. I am constantly in search of new teaching methods and techniques.
