16 years teaching in vibrant, structured yet silly Middle School classrooms, teaching Humanities, as well as Language Arts, Social Studies and Literacy individually. Many years slogging away on leadership teams and assisting with staff development. In addition, I am a freelance copywriter, producing words that convert, blogs and doing public relations for businesses. Most importantly, the humbling, joyful, infuriating, and wonderful role of parenting three small children has added much to my life experience over the years.
I revel in creating structures that set students free. Through careful design I seek to ignite the messiness of learning. By communicating immediate value, offering choice and variety, building community, and and motivating challenge-seeking, I want to draw students into a world of learning that feels more purposeful than "school".
Every time a former student comes running across a parking lot, tugs on my shirt, or comes around a store counter to hug me and thank me. Every graduation announcement, social media shout out, or joyful parent conference. Every light bulb moment and proud final product. Of course, these are the awards we all value most.
I have gained so much from reading. I am an insatiable researcher, inquisitor, and consumer of all types of writing. Also, a Bachelors in Professional Writing from the University of Puget Sound, and a Masters in Education from Portland State University. The classroom, parenting, the business world; many, many conferences and trainings. Our education never ends.
