TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught 28 years in the public schools. Five of those years were in Northeastern Ohio, the last 23 have been in Central Florida. I taught grades 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the classroom, and music and art to all elementary grade levels, ESOL to Vietnamese children, and a program I developed, "Academics through Music" to K-5 in the Orange County Public Schools. I have presented "Academics through Music" workshops in Ohio, Utah, Arizona, and Florida.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am a teacher who uses music, movement, and drama in all areas of teaching - but not necessarily at the same time :) I have found that combining music and movement when learning math skills helps the students remember the skills while having fun in the process. I believe in hands-on learning and am therefore often seen toting many goods to the classroom. One more element found in my teaching style is humor. I believe humor can be the greatest tool of all when trying to create a happy learning environment.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Teacher of the Year, Disney Teacheriffic Award Winner 3 years Disney Teacheriffic Special Judges Award Winner Excellence in Education Award presented by University of Central Florida Most Influential Teacher in Orange County Award given at National Staff Development Conference at Disney Dolphin Hotel.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended Hudson Public Schools in Ohio for grades K-12. I then attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where I received my Elementary Education degree, with a minor in music. I served a mission in Honduras, Central America where I learned a system of teaching Spanish-speaking children, who did not attend school, to read. Since graduating, I have returned to college to take classes related to the fine arts and now serve on the Lake County (Florida) Cultural Arts Alliance board.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I write children's songs, both for fun and for learning. I developed a system of teaching called Academics through Music. It incorporates song, dance, and activities that reinforce the skill being taught. This system was instrumental in raising student state test scores. I am now working as an independent consultant for educators and recently wrote a book, "The Truth Is...Confessions and Tips from an Elementary School Teacher." It can be purchased through me or on Amazon.
