I spent a full year student teaching in 7th and 8th grade science classrooms in New Hampshire. Since then, I have taught 8th grade science in both Washington and Colorado. Curriculum areas I have the most experience with include properties of matter, chemical reactions, forces and motion, genetics, anatomy, ecology, natural resources, and geology. I also plan and coordinate the middle school science fair at my school each year and run a school Science Club.
I like to mix up the way classes are run to address all types of learners. I prefer to assess learning in project-based ways over standardized tests. Each unit I teach includes readings, discussions, laboratory exercises, and other hands-on activities. I think it is best for students to include some independent work and some group and partner work.
