TEACHING EXPERIENCE

ESL is in my blood. My mother arrived in the United States at age 18 with almost no English skills and had me at 20, so I grew up in an ESL home.

I've taught ESL/EFL students in the private sector for almost 20 years now, both in the States and in South Korea. I've taught adult international students at Intensive English Programs in the USA, and it's with those students in mind that I make my resources. I try to fill in the gaps between what my students and I have available to us and what we actually need.

My students have often been the inspiration for many of the sentences I use in my grammar resources! They have also been invaluable as resources--I have often gotten very helpful feedback when trying out a new resource on them.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My adult ESL lessons are centered around student-directed discoveries such as linguistic investigations and employed communicative activities and cooperative learning. Group/pair work is heavily emphasized, with students taking the lead as much as possible. The goal for most of my adult students has been to pass an English-proficiency exam to get into university, so I have taught academic English as well as basic survival English. What I create reflects that.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Read about teaching adult ESL at my website, rikeneville.com .

When I'm not crafting new resources or adding to older ones, I am into nature walks and yoga. I love to read, compost, and find new ways to do with less. I make grand plans to take vitamins on a regular basis. I always try to cook enough food to have leftovers, but I always discover all over again how much I love my own cooking and eat every bit of it.
