Leticia Smith is originally from Mexico City and has lived in Austin, TX since 1986. She received a BBA from Texas State University and an Accelerated Learning certificate from the University of Houston. At the University’s Spanish Department she worked as an Instructor Assistant and acquired invaluable experience teaching Spanish as a second language. In 1993 she started teaching children in all grades at different elementary schools. This experience eventually led to the development of her award-winning program, Risas y Sonrisas Spanish for Kids.
Risas y Sonrisas - “Laughter & Smiles” is a comprehensive, fun and easy to use, multi-grade instructional program for teaching Spanish to elementary school children (K-5th grade). The materials interconnect to present the same information in a variety of ways. Our goal is to provide students with meaningful, context-rich, and enjoyable opportunities to experience the Spanish language. A positive introduction is essential to promote a future love for the language and to continue learning at higher levels. Research has proven that children are natural language acquirers who can learn languages easily at an early age. Before the age of 10, self-consciousness is at a minimum, and auditory acuity is high. With the Risas y Sonrisas Spanish for Kids curriculum, students become familiar “by ear” with the sounds and common language structures of Spanish. The focus is on vocabulary acquisition and practical conversation rather than formal grammar. Our curriculum has been used in schools since 1998. There are thousands of students and homeschoolers that have acquired their Spanish skills and love for the language through “Laughter & Smiles - Risas y Sonrisas"
