I have taught over 16 years, beginning with one semester of teaching an "alternative" program for at-risk 7th and 8th grade students, then on to 15 years of all four grades of high school (with one more year of 7th grade mixed in). I have taught all English Language Arts courses, but I have also been a volleyball coach for 13 of my 16 years.
I believe in leading by example. I use a lot of my own writing as examples for my students, and this also allows me to connect with them, because they learn more about me and are more apt to share more about themselves. I try to incorporate humor into my daily lessons as well as my tests. If they are laughing, they may not even realize they are learning. I am also not afraid to let them see me tear up every now and then. When you get so close to them, it is often hard not to shed a tear occasionally.
I was awarded Teacher of the Year at my first high school, where I taught for 10 years. I was also awarded the Assistant Coach of the year at the same school (for being a Varisty Volleyball Assistant Coach). In 2009, I became a National Board Certified Teacher.
Attended Eldorado High School in Albuquerque (where I currently teach) for three years, but graduated from Sandia High School in Albuquerque. I attended The University of New Mexico and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Language Arts Education in December of 1996.
I have two amazing boys and an incredible wife. I have written two novels (both unpublished and still need revision work), and I write a lot of short stories. One of my stories was published in Lynx Eye Literary Magazine in 2003, and another story placed 3rd in the 2003 Southwest Writers Contest. However, since I became a father, my writing time and opportunities have dwindled, but having my boys is worth it. I have been the head volleyball coach at my current school for six years, and I coached for seven years as a volleyball assistant. In my younger days I played beach volleyball at a semi-professional level and even competed against recent Olympian Jake Gibb.
