I was born and raised in a very musically competitive and rich environment in Houston, Texas. My musical performance debut was in a public school first grade Christmas program wearing a bright green tutu, a star on my head, packages bound with elastic on my feet, slowly turning in place and singing “I’m a Little Christmas Tree”! I don’t remember whether I got a standing ovation or if the audience even applauded but I have never forgotten the magic of that performance! Beginning in high school and continuing through college, I performed in numerous opera and musical theater productions. I was a semi-finalist in the Southeastern District Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 1978. In addition to performing, I started directing opera and musical theater productions while attending Georgia State University. After graduating cum laude with a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance, I began teaching studio voice and piano lessons as well as music theatre workshops. While obtaining my certification to teach in public schools, I taught grades 4 through 12 in a private school setting. I have been teaching in my current public school in the Atlanta, GA area since the spring of 1993. I currently teach General Music and Chorus to kindergarten through 5th grade.
Inside each individual is a divinely-endowed musical spark. That spark may not seem big enough to light a bonfire; but then again, it only takes a tiny flicker to lend light to a darkened place in life. I want my students to know and utilize the musical “spark” that is within each and every one of them.
