TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a professor at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln. I have over 20 years of experience in the field of special education as a teacher, technical assistance provider, and professor. I received the 2000 Distinguished Initial Career Research Award by the Council for Exceptional Children and secured over 22 million dollars in external funding, published more than 150 articles, book chapters, and books that focus on serving children at risk of school failure and research issues. I have developed a number of behavior (e.g., The Think Time Strategy) and literacy interventions that have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (e.g., Stepping Stones to Literacy, Early Vocabulary Connections, Multiple Meaning Vocabulary Program). I am the lead author of “Vocabulary learning: Tools and strategies for teaching students with learning difficulties.”

University of Nebraska, Lincoln Teaching Council. 2005 YMCA Strong Community Award for outstanding contribution to youth programs in Lincoln, NE. 2005 Think Time Strategy selected as a promising program by U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Program. 2004 Stepping Stones to Literacy nominated as an Evidence-Based Early Literacy Program by multiple organizations. 2003 Wes Becker award for outstanding research on direct instruction. 2001 Think Time Strategy selected as a promising program by U.S. Department of Educa¬tion’s Safe and Drug Free Schools program. 2000 Initial career research award for the Council for Exceptional Children. 1999 Dean’s award for excellence in research, College of Education, Arizona State University.
