I walked into my first classroom in the fall of 2011 and have loved every minute of it! I started working in the 5th grade classroom in an inner city school in Chattanooga, Tennessee and am now in my 6th year at a Title 1 High School in Lehigh Acres, Florida. I never dreamed of teaching in a high school but I can now imagine myself nowhere else. I have taught Reading the last 6 years in both 5th grade and all graes of Highschool including Senior SAT/ACT prep. I am now teaching full time Freshman AVID with one prep for a Leadership/Renaissance class made up of all grade levels. On top of teaching, I am also a cheer coach and SGA class sponsor. I have helped with school events to develop school culture as well as planned prom for 400+ students. I am not perfect but I try to be as perfect an imperfection as possible!
I work at one of the only AVID Demonstration High Schools in the country. If you do not know what AVID is, look it up... Its FANTASTIC!! All of my lessons keep AVID in mind a long with a ton of KAGAN structures to add engagement and increase understanding in my room. I love my kids and I find the best way to teach is through building relationships. I tell my kids everyday... We work hard and we play hard! Everything I do in my classroom is for a reason whether it be to learn a topic or just work on social skills (much needed!!). In my class, we take notes, we study, we do group work, and we talk about EVERYTHING! My goal is to get my students excited about learning and talking about it! I find the more involved they are, the better they do.
