So many art projects succeed or fail based on the drawing step. By 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, many of my kids think they're bad at drawing. One approach that works well for this age group is providing line drawings with a simple grid. This lesson

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I teach art to children after school in Westchester, New York. I teach grades 1-4 at our local elementary school and grades 5-6 at the middle school. I love creating art lessons, and I love the time with the kids.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I try to achieve a balance between directed skill development and a child's own creative vision. I like to teach specific techniques and provide the opportunity for children to add their own imagination to the project, to experiment with a variety of materials, and just to enjoy making art!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I'm currently painting in watercolors and am happy two of my paintings of rainbow trout were selected for a juried show last year, "Call of the Wild!" at the Anderson Chase Gallery in Goldens Bridge, NY.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a Master's from Northwestern University and a Bachelor's from Kenyon College. I've studied art, art history, English, and marketing/advertising. I completed an internship with Mona Brookes, artist and author of Drawing with Children, a few years ago at her studio in Berkeley, CA.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I live in Westchester County, NY with my husband. Our two children are in college, fortunately not too far away. We enjoy spending time on Nantucket with family and friends. You can follow me here on TpT, on Instagram at ruthchapman.art and my website with my own art is www.ruthchapmanart.com
