Teaching is my life's work! I am an educator and curriculum specialist. For nearly 20 years, I have taught grades K-8, as well as having served as a Literacy Coordinator and now as Academic Initiatives Mentor. I am an educational consultant and have presented workshops in reading and writing in the United States and most recently in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I have taught Reading Recovery (early literacy intervention),served ELL students, and taught in a second language immersion school. I serve on my school's grant writing committee and advocate for quality education.
I have to be as interested in what I teach as my students. I am also a firm believer in humor and fun! I encourage students to construct and extend their own learning with my support, so both independence and a student-driven classroom are key. I believe in rigor, so challenging each child, wherever he/she may be on the learning continuum, is a constant for me. This is challenging, but I find that practicing a gradual release of responsibility accompanied by hands-on learning keep me focused on the goal. I always looking to improve and learn more about the content I am teaching - I readily try other's ideas and fit them to work in my own classroom. Teamwork makes the job rewarding!
